I’ve finished the text for the picture book called WHEN LIONS ROAR! to be published by Orchard Books/Scholastic Press. This book is much more like a poem than any picture book I have ever written.
I’m also working on a health-related non-fiction series for young children age 2 1/2 and up called ALL ABOUT US BOOKS. I have written the text for the first three books and I am about to start writing the fourth book in this series, which will be published by Candlewick Press.
And I am jotting down notes and dialogue for yet another new picture book about strong feelings. I’ve started writing the story, but I’m stumped about how to end it, as I usually am. I’ll have to write more of the story before I will know if it makes any sense at all. Usually, I don't work on two books at the same time, but doing the fourth young nonfiction book and this newest picture book somehow seems doable. I work on one in the AM and the other in the PM. Perhaps I can only do this if I'm writing in two different genres — nonfiction and fiction. I don't think I could work on two fiction picture books at the same time, or two nonfiction books at the same time. But one never knows...
Writing, writing, rewriting-and more writing. No complaints at all about all the writing I have to do. It's what I love to do. And it means that there are even more books of mine that will be published all the way through 2014! I know that seems so far away, but the work that an author, illustrator, and editor do has to be completely finished one full year before the a book is printed, shipped, and published, and finally lands in bookstores and libraries. Yep, it takes that long.
