Illustrated by Michael Emberley

This picture book, illustrated by Michael Emberley, will be published by Little, Brown & Company in June 2008. This story, told by a young boy, talks about what life was like before the birth of his new brother, Harry. When Harry takes a bite of his banana, his older brother says, “Throw Harry in the trash!” When Harry screams in the middle of the night, his older brother screams back, “Mail Harry to the Moon!” The next morning, when Harry's brother wakes up, he cannot find Harry — necessitating a trip to the moon.

MAYBE A BEAR ATE IT!

Orchard Books, January 2008

Illustrated by Michael Emberley

This story, told by an endearing creature, is the story of how bereft this creature feels when it's bedtime, and it has lost its favorite book-of-the-moment! First, bewilderment, then worry, and then panic sets in. "Maybe a bear ate it!" the creature worries. "Maybe a stegosaurus stomped on it!" These thoughts are much too worrisome! That's when the creature is compelled to go and look for its beloved book — because it's impossible to go to sleep without it!

DON'T FORGET TO COME BACK!

Candlewick Press, February 2004

Pictures by Harry Bliss

It was a treat to work on a book with cartoonist Harry Bliss. He has created the art for our picture book DON'T FORGET TO COME BACK!. This book is the story of a child who does everything possible — from telling her parents, "I'll come with you!" to running away to the South Pole — to get her parents NOT to leave her with the babysitter and NOT to go out. Harry's pictures for this book have me in stitches. Children and adults will love Harry's take on the child and the family I have written about, and I bet they will laugh out loud at the humor in his insightful drawings.

I AM NOT GOING TO SCHOOL TODAY!

Margaret K. McElderry Books/Simon & Schuster Books for Children, July 2003

Illustrated by Jan Ormerod

My picture book I AM NOT GOING TO SCHOOL TODAY! was illustrated by Jan Ormerod. Jan so tenderly captures the feelings this young child has when he decides that skipping the first day of school is a VERY good idea. "I'm NOT going to school today!" the young narrator announces to his parents. "You don't know all the kids' names, or where the crayons are, or where the toilets are... and so many other things!" he tells them. Don't we all — young and old — feel this way when we're about to do something new? Even at my age, I certainly still have these feelings! Who wouldn't rather just skip the first day-or the first hour of almost anything new?
